The Role of Background Blur and Contrast in Perceived Translucency of See-through Filters

Translucency is an appearance attribute, which primarily results from subsurface scattering of light. The visual perception translucency has gained attention in the past two decades. However, studies mostly address thick and complex 3D objects that completely occlude background. On other hand, transparency flat thin see-through filters been studied more extensively. Despite this, do not background remains understudied. In this work, we manipulated sharpness contrast black-and-white checkerboard patterns to simulate impression filters. Afterward, conducted paired-comparison psychophysical experiments measure how amount blur relates perceived translucency. We found while both affect translucency, relationship neither monotonic, nor straightforward.
